Mechanicsville is home to about 1800 residents on the Chesapeake Bay side of southern Maryland just 50 miles from Washington DC. It's known for its housing, family appeal, diversity, and public schools. This rural community is home to families and young professionals and about 77% of residents own their own homes.
Nestled along State Route 5, Mechanicsville features a few small restaurants, amenities, and businesses, and most of the homes are either located in town or in outlying areas.
Mechanicsville is part of the St. Mary's County public school district and residents with primary age schoolchildren attend the Mechanicsville elementary school. Other schools serving Mechanicsville include the Chopticon high school and the Margaret Brent middle school. The high school and middle school are about 4 to 6 miles from most homes in Mechanicsville and the elementary school is located just north of town.

Mechanicsville has a large Amish population in the area consists of eight church districts and over 1000 residents. They originally came to the area in 1940 after several members left the Amish community in Lancaster County Pennsylvania over a conflict with schools. The Amish in St. Mary's County maintain dairy and produce farms as well as several Amish businesses. Mechanicsville is also home to an Old Order Mennonite community.
