Indian Head MD History

The Indian Head peninsula, a scenic stretch of land jutting out into the Potomac River, has a rich history dating back to indigenous peoples who inhabited the area for centuries. Among these early inhabitants were the Mattawoman tribe, believed to be a branch of the Piscataway tribe, who spoke the Algonquian language. When English settlers arrived, they referred to the land as "Indian Head" due to its distinctive shape resembling a peninsula. According to historical research from the Charles County Historical Society, the term "Indian Head" is derived from "Indian Headlands". Another explanation suggests a tragic love story involving a brave from a foreign tribe and an Algonquin princess, but this tale has been dismissed as folklore by local historians.
