More about Charlotte Hall
Charlotte Hall is a small community along Highway 5 between the Patuxent and the Potomac River on the St. Mary's County Peninsula. It's home to about 1500 residents and is the primary home from Maryland Veterans Home for Disabled Veterans as well is a VA clinic on the side of the former Charlotte Hall Military Academy. The Academy has been declared the Charlotte Hall Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it's home to a sizable Amish farming community nearby with a large farmers market and flea market complex.
Charlotte Hall History
With its numerous historical buildings, Charlotte Hall is rich in our nation's history. The historic district encompasses a small village intersected by "Old Route 5", that runs east to west through the town. There's a lot of historical buildings and sites situated around this community. There are 13 recorded buildings on the National Historic Register and the Charlotte Hall Military Academy is the oldest military preparatory school in the state. The first Charlotte Hall School was established in 1774 and 1852 became known as the Charlotte Hall Academy. The school remained in business for over 200 years and when it closed, most of the buildings were demolished to make way for the Charlotte halls Veteran Home. However, Dent Chapel, right across the street is one of the only remaining buildings of the Charlotte Hall Academy called the White House, built in 1803. The small community has slowly grown over the decades and is a sleepy, bedroom town with quaint little historical homes, vintage-style properties, and hidden historical tales just waiting to be explored by visitors and locals alike.
About the Town
Charlotte Hall is home to between 1500 and 1900 residents where 60% owned their own homes. The small village is nestled around several intersections from Highway 6 and Highway 5, with the Homage Farmers Market right in the center. A little farther north on Highway 5 is another intersection at Oaks Road where you'll find other services such as auto parts, farm stores, Ace Hardware, a few restaurants, and Food Lion. This is not a large town but it does offer a good central location where you can head north just 20 minutes to downtown Waldorf, less than five minutes to the Patuxent River on Golden Beach or head over the border of the Potomac River to Virginia on Highway 301 about 10 to 15 minutes West. It's fairly close to most of the bridges so getting around to Prince Frederick, South to Leonardtown, or the Patuxent River NAS field is no more than 30 minutes in either direction.

"We just transferred to this school and they have gone the extra mile to welcome my kids. Both my boys are behind in reading, One of my kids has Adhd. I had to fight & debate with their old school to get extra help only to be told no. WMES is totally different, they jumped at the chane to help my kids. I have seen a lot of improvement. The staff is super accommodating, welcoming and hepful. Communication with the teachers is superb." - GreatSchools
